Our 4 hour tour will include stops at the highlighted sites listed below with time to enjoy and take photographs. (1) Signal Hill National Park - This historic site celebrates the rich communications and military history of Signal Hill and sits amidst a spectacular view of St. John’s and the sea. Signal Hill was the reception point of the first transatlantic wireless signal by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901, as well as the site of harbor defenses for St. John’s from the 18th century to the second World War. Close to Signal Hill you will visit Quidi Vidi- a quaint 17th century fishing village nestled in the heart of St. John’s. Quidi Vidi Brewery and Mallard Cottage (oldest wooden house with antiques and collectibles inside) are both a must to see. (2) Cape Spear National Park.- The oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland is situated at Cape Spear along with the Most Easterly point of land in North America.Visit where the sun rises first. The visitor center contains exhibits on the history of lighthouses and the tradition of light keeping. See how a light keeper and his family might have lived in the mid 19th century. Bring your binoculars to see the whales and/or icebergs that frequent this area (in season). A brief excursion from Cape Spear along route 11through Maddox Cove brings you to another fishing village of Petty Harbour. Don’t forget to ask the guide about a movie filmed here. Have your camera ready! Historic Buildings such as the Courthouse, Government House, Anglican Cathedral, Roman Catholic Basilica of St. John the Baptist etc.. will also be seen throughout the tour.
